Building a Reading Culture through Libraries

Monica Chandra

Monica Chandra’s transition from teacher to library educator at City Montessori School in Lucknow represents a remarkable journey fueled by adversity and a deep-seated love for reading. Monica’s career took an unexpected turn when laryngitis made teaching impossible, leading her to discover librarianship—a field that perfectly aligned with her passion. She now serves as a friendly reader for grades 3-8, building a path of literacy and learning.

Monica views libraries as essential pillars of society, particularly in the digital age where the abundance of information poses the challenge of identifying credible sources. Under her guidance, the school library has transformed into a dynamic space that not only nurtures a love for reading but also serves as a reliable wellspring of authentic knowledge. She believes in evolving school libraries into community hubs, emphasizing the importance of engaging activities and social events that make reading a joyous and communal experience.

Her approach to fostering a reading culture is rooted in the wisdom of Dr. S. R. Ranganathan’s laws for libraries, ensuring a perfect match between books and readers. Monica has innovatively engaged students, including non-readers and the hyperactive, through interactive games and activities like Library Scavenger Hunts and Book Buffets. Her initiatives, such as the Student Library Council and the introduction of Library Scoreboards, have cultivated a sense of responsibility and enthusiasm for reading among students.

The pandemic presented challenges but also growth opportunities. Monica embraced the shift to digital, enhancing her library classes with interactive tools and apps that captivated her students. Her efforts have not only maintained but enriched the library’s role in education during uncertain times.

Monica envisions a future where libraries balance traditional charm with digital innovation. She advocates for ongoing staff development in technology and partnerships with tech companies and publishers to ensure libraries remain inclusive, equitable, and at the forefront of educational evolution. Monica Chandra’s story is a testament to continuous professional learning in the world of librarianship.
